Fishing for Litter South West was officially launched in March 2009 and is now fully operational in 6 ports across the region. The project aims to enlist fishermen from across the South West with the goal of recruiting 60 vessels and collecting 200 tonnes of marine litter. The project is currently funded until 2011 and recently gained endorsement from the Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, then Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Fishing for Litter is an active environmental response to the progressive increase of marine litter in the seas around Great Britain, Scandinavia and Western Europe. Through the participation of local fishermen, this project is designed to recover marine litter whilst raising awareness of the significant detrimental impact such waste can have on the marine environment. The South West project is based upon the success of Fishing for Litter Scotland, which has been in operation for 4 years and has involved 15 of Scotland's major ports and over 100 vessels. Fishing For Litter South West is a collaboration between KIMO and Seafood Cornwall Training Ltd.
