Highly Radioactive Shipment Threatens Coastal Communities - 14 January 2010
The first return shipment of foreign nuclear waste from Britain is due to occur in the next few days with the shipment of highly radioactive waste from the Sellafield Plant to customers in Japan. These nuclear shipments raise critical security, safety and environmental concerns and subject coastal communities to unnecessary risks.

One Hundred Tonnes of Rubbish Removed From Scotland's Seas - 13 January 2010
Fishing vessels voluntarily taking part in the current Fishing For Litter project have removed over 100 tonnes of marine litter form the seas around Scotland since April 2008 in a bid to tackle the pollution problem. The recent milestone means that the Fishing For Litter scheme in its various forms has now removed more than 215 tonnes of debris from Scottish seas.

UK Environment Minister has endorsed KIMO's pioneering Fishing for Litter environmental initiative - 19 August 2009
The Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs visited Newlyn on 13th August 2009 and met representatives of the pioneering Fishing For Litter South West project. The Minister spent time with local skippers involved in the scheme to hear their concerns regarding marine litter and its impact on the fishing industry.

Biggest plutonium shipment in history threatens the marine environment - 05 March 2009
Two British based ships, the Pacific Pintail and Pacific Heron, have recently been loaded with deadly cargos of MOX nuclear fuel in France for transportation to Japan. KIMO is against all shipments of highly radioactive material by sea as this poses an unnecessary threat to the coastal environment.

Shetland’s third Designated Landing Port for fish, Cullivoe in Yell, has joined the Fishing for Litter Scotland Project, which is co-ordinated by environmental group KIMO UK. The project aims to engage harbours and boats in reducing the amount of litter in the marine environment.

British-Irish Council Supports Fishing for Litter Initiatives - 09 February 2008
At the recent meeting of the British-Irish Council Environment Sectoral Group Ministers agreed to support Fishing for Litter Schemes within their jurisdictions . The proposal came from the Isle of Man who presented a paper highlighting Fishing for Litter, which is coordinated by KIMO UK, as an innovative response to the environmental and economic impact of marine litter on coastal communities.

KIMO Welcomes Forth Ports Decision to Abandon Ship-to-Ship Transfers Plans - 02 February 2008
Yesterday common sense finally prevailed when Forth Ports Plc abandoned plans to tranship 7.8 million tonnes of Russian crude oil per year in the Firth of Forth, near Edinburgh. The operations would have threatened several environmentally sensitive sites and placed responsibility for clean up operations, in the event of an oil spill, onto the Local Authorities around the Forth not the Port themselves.

OSPAR Highlights KIMO Pioneering Work on Fishing for Litter - 04 July 2007
At its Commission meeting this week, in Ostende, Belgium, OSPAR chose marine litter as one of the main themes at its press conference highlighting the pioneering Fishing for Litter initiative as a significant measure in addressing the problem. Guidelines on Developing Fishing for Litter projects developed by KIMO International were approved along with other measures on marine litter such as a Marine Beach Litter Monitoring Programme, led by the Netherlands and Belgium.

Containership Disaster Highlights North Sea Ministers Lack of Action - 23 January 2007
The grounding of the MSC Napoli in Lyme Bay, off the Devon Coast, on Sunday the 21st of January is exactly the type of incident that North Sea Ministers and Senior Officials decided was not worthy of action at the North Sea Ministerial Meeting on Shipping and Fisheries in Göteborg last May. KIMO International had called on Ministers to take action to protect coastal communities from the impacts of pollution from containerships however these requests fell on deaf ears despite previous commitments.

Shipment of Ultra Hazardous Radioactive Cargoes on Atlantic Osprey Potential Terrorist Target - 20 November 2006
The Atlantic Osprey, owned by the British Nuclear Group, will transport 1.25 tonnes of mixed oxide fuel (MOX) fuel containing about 90kg of plutonium to Swiss utility Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke (NOK) in the next couple of days. The MOX will be transported by sea from Sellafield to Cherbourg before it is delivered to the Beznau plant in Switzerland overland
