Kommunufelagid (The Assosiation of Faroese Municipalities) is an interest organisation where all 29 municipalities are members. All our members have a coastline and have responsibility for the marine environment in harbours, marinas and beaches.
Kommunufelagid is a member of KIMO since 1993 and has actively taken part in KIMO’s lobby work on Dounreay and Sellafield as well as making the Faroe Islands government aware of KIMO issues that need addressing.
We have taken part in different projects like the OSPAR Marine Litter Monitoring Project and we are starting the Fishing for Litter project up again after a two year break.
We have operated an office for Agenda 21 issues for the past 10 years. This work is now in the hands of each municipality.
Kommunufelagid is a consulting partner when law proposals that will affect the municipalities are put forward by the government.
The Faroe Islands economy is very dependant on healthy marine environment as fisheries and fish-farming are the largest industries.
