Despite improvements in environmental management the expansion of the oil and gas sector has inevitably resulted in an increase in the pollution produced by this industry.
The European oil and gas industry has expanded hugely since the 1970s and a vast amount of money continues to be invested in the industry – an estimated £14.8 billion in 2014. This has led to an increase in the volume of hazardous materials and chemicals contaminating Europe’s oceans and a corresponding increase in the potential for a serious environmental disaster.
KIMO works towards the implementation of legislation that will raise health, safety and environmental standards in the oil and gas industry. KIMO also campaigns for adequate legislation to cover the decommissioning of oil platforms.
